Martha Colburn

A new film by Martha Colburn will be shown in the gallery on September 12. She will also vj at the show of Al Lover.

Martha Colburn is best known as a filmmaker, animator and multimedia artist. Colburn worked together with many different artists and musicians, including Deerhoof. The theme throughout her work are social issues; these are diverse and often political. We find subjects of death, violence, consumerism and sexuality in her animated films. She uses any type of material for her collages, for instance pieces of paper, paints them with such inspiration, improvisation and imagination and finally makes them move in her film. This way she creates an overwhelming and fascinated combination of painting and film.

Distel

Distel makes electronic music difficult to label. This project of Peter Johan Nijland (also singer of Hadewych) consists also of Nijland, an electronic percussionist (also member of Hadewych) Scramasax. Gonzo Circus describes their music as ‘personal, electronic intense new wave’.  It is based on a dark industrial electronic sound combined with vocals which makes it intense and elusive. The name that comes to mind while listening to their music is Coil.

Amen Dunes

Amen Dunes stands for dark wayward guitar sounds. It is the project of Damon Mc Mahon (Philadelphia, USA).

His solo career started in 2006, when he released the album ‘Mansions’ under his own name. Later that year he began recording as Amen Dunes, sequestering himself in a cabin in the Catskills (NY).

Nowadays Amen Dunes seems to be drawing attention of a larger audience and to be understood. The new album ‘Love’ is his most accessible record, but still it sounds claustrophobic, inimitable, deliberately sloppy and incomplete. He has been working on ‘Love’ for a year and a half, collaborating with members of Iceage and Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Shitcluster

Shitcluster is an experimental, lo-fi soundproject of Charlie Watkins, who collaborates with different musicians, Jan van Duivenvoorden is one of them.  He is the founder member of the famous industrial acid-technoband from the 90’s, Unit Moebius. Unit Moenius produces loud, raw and uncompromising  lo-fi and low budget-techno. Since the start in 1998 Shitcluster is using minisamplers, distortion, turntables, cassettes, effect-pedals and microphones, and that’s not all: samples are looped in all kinds of different lengths. This results in a fusion of weird and dark sounds.

Nowadays many electronic live-acts appear on stage as autistic button-clickers/turners. That’s why Shitcluster focus more on the visual aspect; their performances are described as confusing, surreal and even funny.
